A Case Study on Chinese Cultural Identity of Overseas Chinese Students in Northern Thailand
Abstract:This paper investigates the cultural identity of four overseas Chinese students who come from the Chinese Village in north Thailand through interviews and questionnaires. The survey found that they generally have a high identification with Chinese cultural symbols,which is closely related to the inheritance of Chinese culture in the local community environment,family and school education. Chinese learners have a strong sense of cultural identity,including the Chinese language,the status of Chinese culture,the role of Chinese culture and the attitude of inheriting and protecting Chinese culture. However,they all show duality in their identities. Chinese learners who grew up in Chinese village tend to be Chinese,while Chinese learners who did not grow up in Chinese village tend to be Thai Chinese,and they are not confident in their Chinese identity. The new generation of Chinese in north Thailand still highly identify with traditional Chinese cultural values such as “modesty”,“respect for the old and care for the young” and “order for the young and old”,while the recognition of values such as “family standard”,“collectivism” and “prioritizing harmony” is at the middle level.
