Creating disk groups
When you enable vSAN on a cluster, you need to assign the required disks by choosing a disk-claiming mode. Physical disks are organized into disk groups, where each group contains one (and only one) cache disk and from one to seven capacity disks. Each ESXi can have a maximum of five disk groups.
To create a disk group, define the disk group and individually select devices to include into it. You can use the vSphere Web Client by going to the Configure tab on the selected vSAN enabled cluster.
In the vSAN menu, click on Disk Management. Select the host and click on the Create a new disk group icon.
Now, select the proper disk for the cache tier (must be a flash-based disk) and then select the disks for the capacity tier. In the second case, you can use the Capacity type drop-down menu to match the type of disks and the type of vSAN (if you select Flash disks, you will have an all-flash storage; if you select HDD disks, you will have a hybrid storage).
